Walk and Work
Have you heard all the buzz going around regarding “Walking while you work” also known as “walk and work”?
It began with Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who has spent the past 15 years studying how much energy people expend during daily activity. Dr. Levine concluded that a sedentary lifestyle was just not natural to humans (and very unhealthy as we all know), so he began investigating the concept of walking while working in order to keep active during a normal work day.
Dr. Levine’s research shows that the normal person can burn about 130 calories per hour by walking at a easy pace of 1-2 miles an hour. And don’t worry, at this pace you will not break into a sweat… but you will get in better shape.
And weight loss is not the only benefit you will receive. You will also relieve stress and help prevent depression (and maybe even make your work a little more enjoyable at the same time).
So a few years ago Dr. Levine partnered with Steelcase, a manufacturer of office furniture to develop the Walkstation. The Walkstation is basically a treadmill with a desk built into the control console.
It’s really very cool… the only problem is that it’s $5000.
However, the good news is that since you probably do a lot of your work on your laptop, all you really need is the SurfShelf laptop holder!
The SurfShelf is not only great for having fun while you exercise (watching online TV, shopping, watching online sports highlights or music videos, playing games, checking your email…), but it’s also a great way to make your work a little fun too!
So if you already own a treadmill, simply use the SurfShelf to upgrade your “normal” treadmill into a “walk and work” treadmill.
And if you are planning on buying a new treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical trainer (basically any exercise machine), just get yourself a SurfShelf at the same time and you’re all good to go.
Like my wife Emie wrote in her post “A Mommy Who Loves the SurfShelf”, one of our first customers wrote to us telling us how she leaves her laptop on her SurfShelf all the time to force herself to get on her treadmill when she wants to get online. Using this idea, Emie now spends about 1-2 hours walking and working each day (and playing an occasional hand of Texas Hold’em on Facebook… she’s really good and I wish the money she wins was real but that’s another story…) while our 1-year old daughter Skye takes her afternoon nap.
And it’s not just for stay at home moms who want to get a workout in while they get a few things done on their laptops. It’s for anyone who works out of their home or who has a home office. Since we started, I’ve had lots of customers buy SurfShelfs specifically to use for work purposes. At a nice pace of 1 – 2 miles per hour, you can accomplish everything on your laptop on the SurfShelf that you can at your desk, with the bonus of getting in shape and losing weight.
So now you can not only have fun exercising, but you can get a little work done too!
Have a great day,
Randy
