The SurfShelf 2008 Holiday Gift List

By randy • December 11th, 2008

I know I’m a little late in putting together a Holiday Gift list, but between getting our new website up and running, shipping out SurfShelfs and trying to spend as much time as possible with my 1-year old daughter Skye during her first holiday season, I really haven’t thought too much about what I would like for Christmas.

But since I love presents as much as the next guy, with a little coffee in me this morning, I hit the Internet to find some things that I think would make great gifts this holiday season. I also found some other interesting holiday lists that I’ll mention at the end as well.

First, here are 10 things for my holiday gift list:

1. The SurfShelf! You know I have to mention that! At only $59.95 this new and innovative item is the perfect gift. Help your family and friends get excited to get in shape! Or buy it for yourself as a treat to get motivated.

Okay, back to the rest of my list…

2. Oxfam International “Unwrapped”: Want to give a loved one something unique? Oxfam Unwrapped is a chance for you to share with your family, friends or loved ones the gift of making a real difference to someone’s life. Simply choose one of the exciting gifts from the Oxfam Unwrapped catalog and a personalized card will be sent to you or your friend or loved one showing how your gift is making a real difference. Your donation turns into a gift for those who need it most. From water jugs to school books to burros, all Oxfam Unwrapped gifts benefit those living in poverty. More info here

3. The Tulsi Hybrid Solar Oven: This solar oven enables you to cook without using any energy (except for the sun of course!). And when using the Tulsi Hybrid in the hybrid mode (plugged in to an electrical outlet), it uses only 25% of the energy required for a conventional oven. The oven reaches temperatures of over 400 degrees and the ‘hybrid’ feature offers an additional advantage: a built-in electronic heating unit enables you to cook with the Tulsi anytime day or night, regardless of the sun or weather. Cooking could not be easier, more efficient or environmentally friendlier! $245. More info here

4. The Flip Mino: I own the original Flip video recorder and absolutely love it. I used it to make all the videos on this site. My friend just bought the Mino and showed it to me last Saturday, and at half the physical size of mine, it’s awesome. $159.95. More info here

5. The “Build your own wooden surfboard” course at Grain Surfboards: Here is a DIY course that results in a one of a kind green product. It’s a weeklong workshop in Maine (not exactly a world surfing capital) where you will learn to build your very own wooden surfboard by hand. With the expert guidance of Grain Surfboards, learn how to steam locally-grown, sustainable white cedar into a killer long board to take home and cherish. $1,575. More info here

6. The Kindle wireless reading device: I’ve never actually tried this out, but it looks super cool and the reviews are fantastic. The book I’m reading right now (World Without End by Ken Follett) is over 1000 pages long and can be a mini arm workout just holding it while reclining (it actually slipped out of my hands the other night and clonked me a nice one in the forehead). With 190,000 books to download for $9.99 in less than a minute, this thing looks like it would be great for anyone who likes to read. $359.00. More info here

7. The ThinkGeek Bluetooth Retro Cell Phone handset: Okay, this is a crazy item, but I love it. Brings back high school memories of hiding in my room and gabbing on the phone. $29.99. More info here

8. The Gorillapod by Joby: The Gorillapod uses its 30 adjustable joints to grip to trees, fences or posts–anything it can wrap its legs around–to provide a steady and secure platform for your digicam! No more hunting for flat surfaces at eye-level: just wrap or hang Gorillapod on any handy object and get in the picture! I think it will also work with the Flip Mino above, but you had better check to make sure. $21.95. More info here

9. The Nike+ iPod Sport Kit: This is a great gift for the fitness enthusiast who runs with their iPod. As you run, your iPod tells you your time, distance, pace, and calories burned. And it gives you feedback at the halfway point and in the final lead-up to your goal. All to your favorite music — including the one song that always gets you through the home stretch. Then you can upload your workout details to the Nike site and share them with the community of users. $35 (plus you need a pair of Nike+ compatible running shoes). More info here

10. Recycled Crafts Box: Here’s a great gift for kids… Author Laura C. Martin pulls together dozens of ideas that take advantage of paper, plastic, metal, and fabric materials you have lying around the house, from yogurt cup dolls and paper beads to braided rag coasters and cardboard castles. Background information on how the materials are produced and interviews with artists who use recycled materials share space with ideas on reducing consumption and kid-friendly games and illustrations. A book of projects that don’t require a massive stash of supplies or an extra trip to the craft store. $8.76 More info here
