Randy’s First SurfShelf Blog
I’m Randy Fenton, the founder and creator of SurfShelf, and this is my first blog post on our brand new site (just launched today!).
Since I developed SurfShelf, I’ve gone through a lot of great changes, had lots of adventures, lost a lot of sleep, learned a lot about health and wellness, got back in shape, lost a few pounds, ate some really great food, found tons of great stuff on the Internet, and generally moved into a new chapter of my life.
It is these past and present experiences that I will draw from in my blog posts. My goal is to bring fresh and fun topics of exercise, health and Internet entertainment together for us all to explore. I also hope that you will send me your stories and ideas about what you like to do online while you workout and how you stay healthy and happy so we can all learn from each other as we embark on this journey together.
My story starts about two years ago when I was an electrical engineer working for a high-tech company based in Oregon (even though I lived “off-site” in LA). My wife and I were trying to get pregnant, I was working long hours and my workouts were quickly going from bad to worse.
I wasn’t going to the gym very often and using the treadmill I bought from my neighbor was hit-and-miss at best. It sat five feet from my desk staring at me from behind in my garage-turned-into-an-office in the first house my wife and I bought together in Redondo Beach, CA.
The thing is, I really did want to get back in shape. I knew and truly believed that it was really important to exercise 4-5 days each week in order to be healthy and happy. But for one reason or another, I just wasn’t doing it.
The crazy thing is, a few years back I had been quite fanatical about my workouts, going to the gym 5 days a week for 1-2 hours at a time. But my life had changed since then and I now had tons of great excuses – I met and married the love of my life, bought a house in a new neighborhood that was twenty minutes from my old gym, and I was eating really good home cooked meals for a change. I was indeed in heaven, but I was also fast becoming the “squire of spare tire”.
Then one day as I trotted along on my treadmill, squinting to read the small print of a magazine article in my dimly lit garage, it came to me… “If I could only get my laptop over here, then I could watch the TV shows online that I’ve heard so much about”. Ten minutes later I was cutting plywood on my table saw and the first SurfShelf was born.
That day changed my life forever. And for that I am eternally thankful.
Has the SurfShelf changed the way you workout? I’d love to hear about your story. What sites do you like to go to?
I’m actually typing this from my wife’s sister’s house in Dallas TX. My wife and I along with our little daughter Skye (yes, we were successful in getting pregnant! Skye will be one year old next Monday on Dec 1st) flew in last night to spend Thanksgiving with her family.
My wife and baby Skye are both taking a nap, so I snuck into the spare bedroom and figured I’d type out this post.
I didn’t bring my SurfShelf with me on this trip (I usually pack it along, especially when I’m going to stay in hotels with gyms) because I knew that they didn’t have a treadmill for me to use here. So this Thanksgiving I’ll just have to make sure to drag the family out for a few walks through the neighborhood. Walking is a great way to get exercise and a wonderful way to catch up with those you are able to coax along with you.
Thanks for visiting my new blog and please come back again soon. We’ll be discussing all types of topics ranging from health and fitness to online entertainment sites and super fun digital content.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Randy
